What jobs can be adapted to telecommuting and who should do them?
The success of telecommuting depends on the structural condition of specific work activities. Information-based organizations are best suited to telecommuting. Traditional factory production jobs are not appropriate for telecommuting. The following are examples of jobs that can be adapted easily to telecommuting: news reporters, planners, programmers, analysts, professional employees and clerical employees.
Job structure. Jobs should be structured so that they require a minimum of physical activity, have easily definable and measurable goals and long-term deadlines, are location-independent and do not require constant communication with management.
What are important qualifications for telecommuters?
A telecommuter should possess the following characteristics:
- exhibits a positive attitude toward telecommuting
- have good communication skills
- have good problem-solving capabilities
- remain calm and in control under pressure
- exhibits a high level of productivity
- work well without supervision
- has strong time management skills
- be flexible enough to respond to a variety of scheduling requests
- be self-directed
- be self-motivated
- be self-disciplined
- be organized
- be independent
- be experienced
- be able to accept social isolation from peers
- want to voluntarily participate in the program
- have been employed for more than one year in the position
- prefer the home environment.
