What jobs can be adapted to telecommuting and who should do them?

The success of telecommuting depends on the structural condition of specific work activities. Information-based organizations are best suited to telecommuting. Traditional factory production jobs are not appropriate for telecommuting. The following are examples of jobs that can be adapted easily to telecommuting: news reporters, planners, programmers, analysts, professional employees and clerical employees.

Job structure. Jobs should be structured so that they require a minimum of physical activity, have easily definable and measurable goals and long-term deadlines, are location-independent and do not require constant communication with management.

What are important qualifications for telecommuters?

A telecommuter should possess the following characteristics:

  • exhibits a positive attitude toward telecommuting
  • have good communication skills
  • have good problem-solving capabilities
  • remain calm and in control under pressure
  • exhibits a high level of productivity
  • work well without supervision
  • has strong time management skills
  • be flexible enough to respond to a variety of scheduling requests
  • be self-directed
  • be self-motivated
  • be self-disciplined
  • be organized
  • be independent
  • be experienced
  • be able to accept social isolation from peers
  • want to voluntarily participate in the program
  • have been employed for more than one year in the position
  • prefer the home environment.
